These amazing pictures were taken in the spring 2 years ago when we lived in Virginia, but since I didn't have a blog then, I'm going to put them on now so I have a record of it.
You can imagine our surprise when we went outside to grill steaks and found a huge bird nest in the grill.
The first day there was one egg. The next day another had appeared, and the following day a third, and then a fourth. Who knew momma birds didn't lay their eggs all at once.
We checked them often, and after several weeks, they began to hatch. Kason loved checking on them each day.
2 hatched, 2 to go
All 4 snuggling. Have you ever seen a baby bird up this close? It was really amazing--their little bodies were so fragile and we could see their veins.
Pretty soon, each time we checked on them, they'd be opening their beaks waiting for momma to feed them.
One of the birds died, and the momma dragged it out onto the side of the nest. Kason was devastated, so we had a little ceremony and buried it in the field by our yard. The other 3 all grew feathers and soon they were hopping around the deck and off they went. It was an amazing spring to watch them, and we all loved it.
(Except cleaning the grill afterwards of course).

How incredible. That would have been so neat to experience. I can't believe the bird built a home in your barbecue though. It sure didn't look like a fun or easy cleaning.
We had a bird try to build a nest is our grill last summer. I think that is why they invented the grill covers.
What a neat experinence for Kasson. I am old and I would still enjoy watching it every day
They sure look weird when they are first born. Not that you want to hear this, but Kason has sure grown up since then.
That's so awesome! We've found baby bird's too but not been able to monitor them that closely. That was the best!
Remind me never to eat anything made on your BBQ. :)
That is so awesome! That's so cool you got to see them so close! We have two nests in our yard right now and you can here the baby birds chirp sometimes. I love it...even though they poop on everything. Not quite as cool as having them in your grill, though...
Melanie stole my comment! I was gonna say, yummmm chicken. The little eggs are cute.
