Hole-in-the-Rock

Tige went this weekend with his dad and brothers over to Escalante to see the Hole-in-the-Rock. If you're not familiar with the story, it's was a group of 250 early Mormon pioneers who were called to go settle San Juan County. They traveled in the wintertime across some of the worse territory in this country and had to go through the "hole-in-the-rock." Tige's great, great grandfather, Joseph Barton, was one of the pioneers who made this trek. They couldn't get the teams to go down this treacherous chute, and Joseph Barton had a blind team of horses which he offered to have go down first. And of course, Tige's family is still in San Juan County today, 5 generations later. Here are some pictures Tige took on their hike.

View looking down the hole. Hard to believe they got wagons and teams down here.

View from the bottom of the hole.

Tige's dad and brother dancing at "Dance Hall Rock" where the pioneers held dances and sing-a-longs.
I recently read the book The Undaunted by Gerald Lund, which is a fictional account of this Hole-in-the-Rock expedition. I lreally enjoyed it and learned so much from this book about their experiences and sacrifices. Tige promised to take our family next year so we can see it too.
(P.S. In case you're wondering how my weekend was, I was home with a sick little boy. He threw up 13 times between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. In the middle of his heaves, the poor little angel said "what's happening?" and "can we say a prayer to make it stop?" Luckily it was kind of a 24 hour thing, and he's doing much better. Tige was also sick on his hole-in-the-rock trip, but thankfully Abby and I have evaded the plague.)

I too have been reading a book about Hole in the Rock. Greg did a 4 wheel trip through it. I think its amazing how they were able to not only cross that terrain but stay safe from the Native Americans too.

How fun and adventurous. That is awesome to be able to experience a little of what their ancestors did.

Those are some good pictures of the actual hole in the rock. It is very amazing! You didn't mention what you were up to while the boys were having fun. :)

It reminds me of seminary council days.
